One thing you quickly discover when joining the Foreign Service, is you are surrounded by a team of nerds. Being a nerd myself, I quickly acclimated during orientation when I was invited for board game and trivia nights, and it has carried over into Mauritania. Since arriving, I have been able to get a few Dungeons & Dragons sessions in with some folks at the embassy, and I have also been able to get in several games of my beloved Warhammer hobby. I think in the last few months I have gamed more than in the last few years of living in the U.S.

With the numerous 3 day holiday weekends recently, a few of us took the opportunity to get a Warhammer battle going. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would be able to get some games going here in Africa, and surprisingly the community for the hobby here is fairly robust (and growing). Below is a photo dump of the battle. It was great fun having a couple of beers and rolling some dice with great people, and for me, a fantastic way to ring in the new year. Cheers! – Nick
