There are only 3 Islamic Republics in the world, Mauritania being one, and the other two being Iran and Pakistan (Afghanistan is close being designated an “Islamic Emirate”). Within that grouping, Mauritania has by far the freest press according to Reporters Without Borders. Out of 180 countries, Mauritania places 97th. At first glance nothing special, but among countries in the developing world, a very solid ranking. Within the larger scheme of the Arab/North African world, only Tunisia has a better Press Freedom Index (by 3 places). The same holds true when comparing Mauritania to other predominantly Muslim countries across the globe such as Malaysia, Indonesia, or the central Asian “Stans”. Even much wealthier countries like Greece, Mexico, and Singapore all score worse than Mauritania in Press Freedom, somewhat defying what I would imagine many folks preconceptions are of an “Islamic Republic”.

I personally was very surprised by the ability of individuals here to exercise free speech in Mauritania. The embassy holds a weekly press briefing that reporters engage in meaningful dialogue, asking tough questions. Social media also plays an active role in the country, with news organizations limiting censorship of sensitive topics, and netizens not afraid to say what’s on their mind when it comes to their government or other governments. If you follow the U.S. Embassy Nouakchott Facebook page, reading the comments on visa interview announcements are always good for a chuckle.

It’s a very interesting time to be here. — Nick
